A protestor at the Australian Open trophy ceremony foregrounded the accusations against Alexander Zverev like never before. Here's what happened to her afterward.
What a brave woman! If she is facing charges, I hope she starts a GoFundMe (if available in Australia) so I can donate to it. Thank you so much for keeping us updated on this, she has restarted a much-needed conversation about the tennis world's incredibly awkward approach to Zverev.
Good for her, sadly I only glanced occasionally at the score and didn't watch any of the trophy presentation, I wish I did now. Hopefully she is safe and well. But I stand with her.
Wow to both her and you, and to the AO for running interference for this choad. I'm frankly too disgusted by men's tennis to keep watching it. During this tournament, the AO social media promoted Alexs new relationship with cutesy posts. What the F are they doing? What are the people running socials for Roland Garros doing? They, like AO, not only promote Zverev, they posted their reassurances to him that he'd win one day, that he's so deserving and good and true. (These were instagram posts from official accounts). Again, what are we doing, here? We also saw Sinner and Djoko with effusive praise for this guy. I don't get it, I never will.
What about Nick K who pled guilty to domestic assault? He is given a microphone during prime time as a commentator and is the first one to throw stones from his already broken glass house.
Zverev would benefit from acknowledging past mistakes and showing world he has undergone either anger management or some level of clearly needed counseling.
Your article was the first I had heard of a heckler at the award ceremony. I was watching the match on demand on ESPN+ tonight and kept watching to the end to see the award ceremony. Guess what? No ceremony. Coverage ended abruptly after Sinner hugs his team and we get one more look at a forlorn Zvarev and fam.
I knew that commentators rarely mentioned the accusations, but I hadn’t seen much else in the way of media protecting Zvarev until this. I watched the entire ceremony at the end of the on demand Keys and Sabalenka final yesterday. So WTF, ESPN? Afraid Zvarev will sue you too?
I hope you hear from the woman who spoke up. Good for her.
So glad she spoke up and that you were able to witness and document some of the treatment of her by security. I hate Zverev's continued presence in the sport. Ugh.
